CA Democrats Face Backlash for Calling Newsom Recall Effort a “Coup”
(Sacramento, CA) — California’s Democratic Party chair is facing backlash for referring to the recall Governor Gavin Newsom campaign as a “coup.” Rusty Hicks accused the effort of being led by white nationalists, and claimed the recall’s supporters are tied to the rioters who sieged the U.S. Capitol last week. Republicans and even some Democrats have condemned his comments, and say describing a legal process as a coup minimizes the attack in Washington. So far, the petition has gathered more than one million signatures, and needs about 500-thousand more by mid-March to trigger a mid-year election.
