Hanukkah Machete Attack Suspect Mentally Unfit To Stand Trial One Year Later

(Monsey, NY) — The suspect in a machete attack on a New York Hanukkah celebration last year is still considered mentally unfit to stand trial. Defense Attorney Michael Sussman says his client, 38-year-old Grafton Thomas, struggles with mental illness, not anti-semitism. Thomas is accused of slashing five people at a rabbi’s home in the Orthodox Jewish community in Monsey in December of 2019, fatally wounding a 72-year-old man. Thomas has been hospitalized for months at a federal facility in Missouri and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
