Starting January first, Assembly Bill 5 will cap the number of submissions writers and photographers can sell to a single outlet each year. The bill is designed to go after companies like Uber that don’t generally pay for benefits. AB 5 is intended to help independent contractors get work as regular employees. However, hundreds of freelance journalists have already been cut this week in anticipation of the law going into effect.
