In Santa Clarita, two teenagers are dead and three remain hospitalized after Thursday morning’s shooting at Saugus High School. The suspect is in critical condition and his motive remains a mystery. KABC’s Kevin Tripp reports from Santa Clarita.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva (vee-uh-new-WAVE-uh) says the first cops on the scene were deputies and officers dropping off their own kids for school.

”They saw the handgun was there, they realized there was not a pending threat immediately and they tended to the care of all of the victims and got the first aid rolling.”

The 16-year-old suspect shot himself in the head. Deputies think the shooting was an isolated incident. They do not think he had help. Sheriff’s Captain Kent Wegener viewed security camera footage of the shooting.

”From the time that he withdrew the handgun from his backpack to the time that he was on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head was about 16 seconds.”

It was the suspect’s sixteenth birthday.
