Lieutenant Brandon Dean with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says deputies were called to a location in East LA because a man was violating a restraining order.

”Deputies from East LA station arrived on scene and immediately saw the suspect, a male Hispanic adult, standing outside the location, holding a three-foot-long sword.”

He says the man ran in the direction of Esteban Torres High School. Dean says deputies gave chase, but did not shoot the suspect at first.

”However, at one point, the suspect advanced on one of the deputies wielding the sword in the air, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”

The man died on the scene. No one else was hurt. Because the shooting happened in front of Torres High, the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
