California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking aim at large power companies. That includes utilities that help bankroll his political campaigns.

Speaking in Los Angeles, Governor Newsom says companies like Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison are not doing enough to prepare for wildfires.

”For close to a year now, we’ve been meeting on a consistent basis every damn week with these guys, laying out protocols, and they’re not meeting those protocols.”

The governor’s tone marks a shift. He wasn’t as critical of the big utilities until the recent planned blackouts. In the past, Newsom has accepted large campaign contributions from PG&E. Thursday, he called his old contributors greedy.

”It’s about decades of mismanagement. It’s about focusing on shareholders and dividends over you and members of the public.”
