A charity fundraiser for a sheriff’s sergeant who died in the Thousand Oaks Borderline shooting is postponed and there’s a lot of finger pointing.

Mike Randall runs the organization that was arranging a charity flag football game for the family of Sergeant Ron Helus. The event was scrapped after the Thousand Oaks police chief and the Ventura County Sheriff thought the fundraiser was becoming too political. Randall tells KABC’s Larry O’Conner he’s stunned.

”We’re, I guess, dumbfounded, because this was never about politics.”

Conservatives like actor Scott Baio were invited, but so was a representative from the governor’s office. In the end, Sergeant Helus’s widow says she’s sad the fundraiser turned into a “politically charged national news story.”
