The soaring cost of rent is pricing many new teachers out of cities like Los Angeles.

Entry-level teachers now must spend over 85 percent of their pay to afford the typical LA rent. Zillow says the problem isn’t isolated to California. Out of the biggest 50 cities in American, only Pittsburgh’s average rent is affordable for new teachers. San Francisco and San Jose have the most acute problems. The typical rent in the Bay Area cities is now more than 100 percent higher than a teacher’s entry-level pay.
