Russell and Paola French’s 32-year-old son Kenneth, who was schizophrenic and non-verbal, was killed during the June incident with officer Savador Sanchez. At a Monday press conference, Russell French says he tried to stop the shooting.

”After hearing officer Sanchez identify himself as a police officer, I begged and told him not to shoot. I said, ‘we have no guns and my son is sick.’”

Sanchez says he was carrying his young son, French knocked him to the ground, and he fired in self-defense, fearing for his life. The French family is preparing to sue the LAPD and the City of Los Angeles. The Riverside District Attorney continues to investigate.
