New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of Americans riding bikes to commute has declined for the third straight year. This despite lane reductions and other measures designed to encourage ridership.
John Russo, co-founder of “Keep LA Moving dot com” says the so-called “road diets” that have been put into effect, in an attempt to increase alternative transportation, have instead made bike riding more dangerous.
“If you look at the total number the accidents are actually up. In the one year post road diet versus the one year pre road diet, and they’re actually up over the five-year average of the pre road diet. And, not only are the accidents up, but the number of injuries are up, and the severity of those injuries is more severe.”
Russo was a guest on 790 KABC.
