We’re in the 14th year of legislators in Sacramento trying to change last call at your local bar to 4 a.m.
Democratic Senator Scott Weiner wrote the latest version.
”We’re just trying to give cities that have asked for this – the nine cities in this bill all say they want to do this – give cities that decision locally.”
His bill was passed by the California Assembly and the Senate this year. Opponents like Michael Scippa with Alcohol Justice is glad Governor Jerry Brown issued a veto.
”In which he stated, ‘I believe we have enough mischief from midnight to 2 without adding two more hours of mayhem.’ And this is what the world, and not just the U.S. sees when last call times are extended.”
Senator Weiner says bars are not the problem.
“To be clear, alcohol can be abused and there are health impacts. But I don’t think our alcoholism problems are about people buying a ten or fifteen dollar cocktail at three in the morning. It’s more about liquor stores and people drinking at home.”
