State Senator urges big utilities to prioritize safety to prevent fires

Sparks from utility power equipment is suspected as a possible cause of the Woolsey Fire and the devastating fire in Northern California.
State Senator Jerry Hill says it’s not clear at this point what exactly caused the current fires, but utility equipment malfunction has been the culprit in the past.
”We’ve got a problem. We can control a lot of things and one thing we should be able to control is that spark and that’s where I think the utilities have not focused as much as they should have on the equipment that they have and on safety as the priority.”
He says it’s not right that big utilities should be able to pass the cost of lawsuits on to the consumers in the form of rate hikes.
Senator Hill was a guest on McIntyre in the Morning.
