What to do about the now-shuttered Exide Battery Plant and the contaminated soil in the surrounding neighborhoods is a topic at tomorrow’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Toxic lead dust from the old Exide Battery Plant has contaminated soil much further than initially thought. As many as ten thousand homes may have high concentrations of lead in their yards and all of that soil most likely will have to be replaced. The matter will take top priority at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Supervisor Hilda Solis has already proposed a two million dollar outreach program to get residents and their properties tested for lead poisoning. The contamination zone stretches further than just Vernon where the plant is located into Boyle Heights and other areas.
