1. Should I eat before I work out?
Absolutely. Working out on an empty stomach can lead to slower results. However, get the right fuel. A small snack 10-30 minutes before with high-quality protein and fast-acting carbohydrates will do the trick.
2. Will weight training make me bulky?
Not if you don't want it to. There are many benefits to weight training other than adding size. Keeping control of your calories and the style of weight training program you follow will eliminate any possibility of unwanted bulk.
3. How much water should I drink a day?
For those who want to lose weight, strive to drink 96 ounces of water a day. Drinking enough water curbs hunger, increases energy and workout performance.
4. When should I stretch before or after I workout?
Stretching is a part of flexibility. Flexibility training should be done before AND after you exercise. The type of flexibility and what areas you work on will vary depending on your individual needs and goals.
5. How long should I do cardio?
Unless you are an endurance athlete, the shorter the better. Short duration, high intensity cardio is a time-saving way of turning your body into a fat burning machine. However, if you are new to exercise, add intensity conservatively.
6. Are resistance machines or free weights better?
Both can play a role in a smart fitness program. Generally speaking, free weights offer much more variety than machines do and should be used more frequently than machines.
7. Is it better to workout in the morning or at night?
Whatever part of the day you can get in to the gym is the best. If your schedule is demanding, getting into the gym is the objective regardless of the time of day. If you have flexibility, keep it simple. Be active with the sun, rest with the moon.
8. How many meals should I eat a day?
Add the amount of time you are awake in the day and divide that number by 2 or 3. For example, if you are awake from 5am to 10pm, that's 17 hours. Divided by 3 would make about 6 meals. Remember, each "meal" should satisfy your hunger until the next meal.
9. Whats the best piece of cardio equipment to work out on?
The piece you haven't been doing regularly. The body likes to adapt to new things, so to stay ahead, keep it new. Vary your type every 2-3 weeks. Remember, intensity is the key.
10. How many days a week should I work out?
This depends on your schedule, abilities and goals. Generally fitness programs occur 2-6 times per week. This only refers to "working out" which is different from simply staying active. No matter what your frequency of training is, stay active the rest of the week.
